Why Having a Survival Kit in Your Car Is Necessary

As we watch in the news we hear almost daily of different natural disasters that take place around the globe. Different parts of the country are prone to different natural disasters. But there are countless situations that we can find ourselves in where we need to be prepared.

With winter approaching, there are many places around the country that will receive snowfall. You can never quite predict how bad a storm is until you are there. Sometimes by driving slow you can navigate through a storm, but there are situations where it is snowing too hard to see and the roads are too deep to drive in. Short drives can take hours to navigate. If you do get stranded in a blizzard you will want to be prepared to wait for a snow plow or for the storm to pass.

Without the right equipment you could be serious health risks, including hypothermia, exposure, or even death. Every year there are stories in the news about people who are stranded and are not able to get themselves out. If help does not come quickly, many people do not make it. Some of the things you will want to have in the trunk of your car would be:

  • Shovel
  • Jumper cable
  • Blanket
  • Protein bar
  • Flashlight
  • Multi-tool knife
  • Old cell phone fully charged
  • Lighter or waterproof matches
  • Duct tape
  • Compass
  • Map
  • Reflective tape or flares
  • First Aid Kit

Not only are these items useful in case of a snowstorm or blizzard, they can come in handy in many other situations where you would be able to either help yourself or someone else. Stay warm and stay calm. Avoid venturing out in the storm as many people can become lost or disoriented and do not have a shelter if the storm worsens.
