The Ten Essentials
1. A map of the area
2. A compass
3. A flashlight with extra batteries and bulb
4. Extra Food
5. Extra clothing, including rain gear
6. Sunglasses and sunscreen
7. A pocket knife
8. Matches in a waterproof container
9. A candle or other fire starter
10. A first aid kit.
Notice how some of the items the Mountaineers list separately (i.e. 1 & 2) are listed together here.

I like her explanation , it's the best I've seen in years. I like to have the basic in case I end up being overnight. Here in Florida it does not require a whole lot of stuff. . One item that always goes with me , a couple miniatures of Vodka. They are emergency items in case a Python or a Boa bites me , take a miniature and pour it in the snakes mouth to make him turn loose. The 2nd one is in case he comes back for more. If he doesn't then it's anti snake ( non venomous ) bite medication for me.
