Hey Nattie! A new sub here…. I am south of you in MN and loves the outdoors too! MN has so many cool outdoor adventure opportunities! Do you ever get in the Lake City, MN area? It's filled with hiking, camping and adventuring awesomeness!

Awesome Views Nattie! My Fav food, smoked food . That looks like a great sandwich. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Gooseberry is kind of amusing, in that the falls area is so accessible that it’s always busy, but very few people actually explore the park very far from the parking lot. The Superior Hiking Trail runs through the park, and traversing that gives you an interesting contrast of the interior to the busy area as you pass through.

Nice vid. Hiking is probably the purest outdoor adventure, even if it lacks the visceral thrill of other activities. Using a gear checklist is a good idea for anyone planning to venture farther than shouting distance from permanent civilization. It may seem like overkill to carry first aid, fire kit, water purification and more, but a good survival setup is lightweight, and it has benefits people may not consider.

Civilization tends to weaken our brains as we become creatures of convenience and comfort. Low blood sugar, low body temp, accumulation of untreated injuries, sensory deprivation from darkness, etc. can cause brain function collapse. I've seen people sprain an ankle at dusk, and suffer (nearly) psychotic breakdown as they grapple with the unexpected reality of skipping dinner and sleeping outside in the cold and total darkness.

A gear list sort of works like a sound map insofar as it trains the brain to operate differently. Sound maps train a person to hear the sonorous splendor of the outdoors. Gear checklists and survival packing train a person's brain to do contingency planning for common survival scenarios. Eventually, it's second nature.

Anyway, enough preaching. Just a little sermon for viewers who may be inspired but not experienced. Pack basic gear and do a checklist.
