Hugh Jarce says:

Where did you get that nasty-looking water from, what was the source? Also, what exactly do the stones achieve? Are they strictly necessary? Edit: Couldn't you just strain the dirty water through the cloth, then pass it through the filter to speed up the filtration?

Hugh Jarce says:

A pestle and mortar would make crushing the charcoal easy.

charlie brownau says:

Why wouldn't we just use standard rocks with charcoal and boiled water ?

charlie brownau says:

All those sands and rocks isnt something that people can just pickup off the average ground

Stigstigster says:

I would be careful to trim the first cloth strainer very neatly and keep the ends held by the rubber band above the water level in the filter. Cloth acts as a wick and starts a siphon down the outside of the filter and into your cleaner collected water. If you use a cloth strainer keep any trailing ends above the water line in the filter to prevent dirty water being siphoned out and down the sides of the plastic bottle.

Traky boy says:

It's probably just me but y do some vids have what seems like porn sound tracks… just throwing it out there

Richard Owens says:

Rather than shaking the bottle with the dirty water in it, you should let it sit there for awhile until the sediment collects at the bottom of the container. You then slowly pour the settled water into your filter. This is a good first stage of filtration that requires nothing but time and patience.

Also, if you allow your water to settle before pouring it through the filter, you can eliminate the coarser layers in the filter. Fine sand – the more the better – is going to be quite sufficient, on its own, along with any charcoal you can include below the sand. The only place you need a coarse filter medium is at the bottom, to keep the charcoal from falling out. And, that could just be some dry grass or a piece of cloth.

An excellent source of fine sand is in any creek, stream, or river – the same place you're likely getting your water. And, if you're getting your water from a lake, find the creeks or streams that feed it to use for your source, if possible. That water is going to have the least algae and other floating debris, etc.

neogovernment says:

If you are going to boil it, why wast your time? Simply strain the water through your shirt!
