It was scene taken straight out of Fallout: rusty metal beams were lying scattered all around; bare skeletons of metal, the only remains of canvas cabins, still stood stoically against the harsh conditions of the foreboding winter; decrepit stone cabins dotted the remaining available space. It was as though a tornado rushed through this beautiful valley causing the inhabitants to flee leaving everything as is.

If not for the sign indicating that this was the Vogelsang High Sierra Camp, I would have probably thought that these structures were remnants of a post-apocalyptic world magically transported back in time and place to high Sierra region of Yosemite National Park.

Nevertheless, I ended up camping nearby, for the sole reason of this campsite’s proximity to the beautiful Fletcher lake.

And pre-dawn, was up and about gingerly navigating the metal beams and concrete platforms making my way to the lake. After shooting this beauty I turned my camera around to capture the sunrise colors that were starting to develop on the eastern sky.

Positioning myself to take advantage of the reflections, I used a wide angle lens to pull in the superbly streaked sky, I bracketed from -2 to +2 EV at 1 stop intervals, shooting at ISO 100 and F14.

A bit of adjustment on photoshop to remove some ghosting ( was not entirely successful), I ended up with this image.
